Medical Examiner

 

 The Medical Examiner is responsible for determining the cause and manner of unexplained and suspicious deaths occurring within Tuscola County.  An agreement is in place with Lapeer County General Hospital to utilize their facilities to perform autopsies when required.  

Our goal is to not only take care of the families in need, but to also have complete and thorough record information on each individual.  All of our records are now entered on-line and the Annual Report statistics are generated from that information.  This has proven to be a time consuming and worthwhile endeavor.

General Information

The office continues to grow and change.  We are continually striving to serve the county and residents to the best of our ability.  Our days are kept busy with scheduling of autopsies, approving cremations, talking to the police departments, physicians, hospital staff, funeral homes, and insurance companies. 

Cremation as an alternate means of disposition continues to be a choice many families and individuals request.  All cremation permits must be approved by the Medical Examiner, a permit typed, and a fee of $10.00 is collected.

We continue to enjoy a productive and cooperative relationship with the Sheriff Department staff and also the Michigan State Police.  Many of the officers have taken extensive Medical Investigation training in order to fulfill this role to the best of their ability.  We appreciate their dedication to this program.
